Installing DoD certificates can cure most issues

With the exception of downloading the ActivClient software below, you can use the notes page for a successful CAC installation on your personal computer.

Download ActivClient 6.2 software for XP, Vista, & Windows 7 from the Air Force portal

The Air Force's ActivClient 6.2 is NOT an upgrade from 6.1 (like the Army's version).  So, make sure you uninstall 6.1, restart your computer, then install 6.2.  Also, you will also have to go to:  Start, Run, type in Services.msc and make sure all ActivClient services are set to automatically on.

NEWS:  The AF Portal became 100% CAC logon only on 15 January 2010.  You now have 2 (maybe 3) options to download ActivClient:

1.  On the main page of the portal users can still log in using a username and password. This gives access to a "Limited Access Air Force Portal."  In the lower right hand side of the screen is a link that says "CAC Middleware Download".  From here you can download the ActivClient.   NOTE:  You can call the Help desk for a temporary password (so you can download the software).

2.  Utilize Lightweight Portable Security and save it to your USB drive.

If you have a PIV II compliant CAC (back shows: "Gemalto TOP DL GX4 144K" or "Oberthur ID One 128 v5.5 Dual") and you are running Windows 7, you may be able to use your CAC without any middleware.

ActivClient 6.1 for Vista (64 bit) can also be download from Lackland AFB  (This site also requires CAC logon but only from .mil domain)

If you are unsure whether you have a 32 or 64 bit version, here is how to find out:

Vista & 7, Right click Computer, select Properties.  Under System, System type you will see 32 or 64-bit.
XP, Right click My Computer, select Properties.  If it doesn't say 64 bit, you have a 32 bit Operating System.

You may purchase ActivClient 6.2 (Works with Windows 7, Vista, & XP) from the following vendors:

 Envoy Data Corporation for $65.00

SCB Solutions for $59.75

TXSystems for $68.00

INFORMATION FOR APPLEUSERS

NOTE:  For whatever reason, in order to access any of the USAF CAC-enabled sites, you must CANCEL when it first asks for your PIN.  After canceling, you can then choose your cert, and it gives you a second opportunity to enter your PIN.  At this point, the PIN must be entered.
