If when you go to digitally sign a form, and you have installed "everything."  But the SIGN box is still NOT showing up in black text, Please double check that you did download the latest DOD certificates.   You can find out exactly how to do this by visiting:  https://militarycac.com/dodcerts.htm

If you get the following error:  "Unable to sign using a certificate; there are no valid signing certificates available on the system.  Please select a different signing method and try again.  The Signature could not be created because the private key of the certificate could not be accessed."

You will need to download the DoD Certificates.  Please follow instructions here:  https://militarycac.com/forums/index.php?topic=9.0  or here:  https://militarycac.com/dodcerts.htm  If downloading and installing the DoD Root Certificates described above does not fix the problem, here is another set of steps that has worked for other people.

Copy "libeay32.dll" from "C:\Program Files\ApproveIt" and paste it to "C:\Program Files\PureEdge\Viewer 6.5\API\65\System" and "C:\Program Files\PureEdge\Viewer 6.5\extensions"

Some other options can be found at:  https://militarycac.com/errors2.htm#SIGN_IS_GRAY

HI,

I have a user who's getting the "The signature could not be created because the private key of the certificate could not be accessed" error when she attempts to sign a document.  The user doesn't get the error when she logs onto another computer and signs documents.

I've removed and reinstalled PureEdge and ApproveIt.  I've also installed the DoD certificates and copied the ApproveIt DLLs to PureEdge folders (mentioned in another post).

When I log on to this user's computer, I'm able to sign documents without any problems.  The problem appears to be in her profile.

Anyone have any ideas what may be causing the above error to occur?  If so, would appreciate any advice/guidance.

Thanks,

Milton Bell

P.S.  Just thought of it, but I'm going to search her profile to see if any ApprovIt related files are there.  If so, I'll remove ApproveIt, delete ApproveIt files from her profile, and reinstall the software.

Hello Milton,

I do believe your idea of setting up your user with a new profile will do the trick.  As you have already eliminated the fact that you can sign just fine on her computer.  And that she can sign just fine on another computer.  There is really nothing left to do.

Great troubleshooting on your part.

I am having a similar issue with a user; the message is slightly different, though:

"Unable to complete the signature; the private key cannot be found or is inaccessible on the system.
Make sure you are using a good signing key or the right smart card."

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the pertinent software (middleware, ApproveIt, PureEdge), cleared the certs from the middleware, re-published the user's certs.
Like Milton's user, i am able to sign under my profile on the problem machine, and she is able to sign on another machine.
She is able to sign encrypted email with her certs.

Steps leading up to this:
)Click "Click to Approve"
)Click the Sign button
)Select the signature cert from the list
)Click OK
)Cue error message.

Would the fact that i am able to sign on her computer indicate that the DoD certs are already installed?  Seems like a logical conclusion to me, but i remember what my dad used to tell me about assuming things.

Milton, were you able to get your issue resolved?  If so, did Chief's solution work for you, or did you have to go ahead and give her a new profile?

Thanks,
Chuck

Hello Chuck,

Your problem sounds almost identical to Milton's problem.  I'm guessing that because you are able to complete all needed items with your logon on the same computer, and she is able to on another computer.

Yes, since you can logon, and it all works for you, the DoD certificates are loaded onto the machine.  You can always reinstall the DoD certs.  It won't hurt anything if you do.

I would rename her profile, then have her logon on again to build a new profile.  Test it.  If it all works, copy her files from the old profile to the new one.

Please post again once you get it working.

Thanks

Finally got our user fixed.

We tried some other things (different CAC reader, reinstalling the DoD certs, etc) first, but none of it helped.
In the end, we wound up having to rebuild the user's profile, tested it out, and it worked.
When we copied the user's docs and settings, though, we copied the problem. Oops.  Undecided
Another try, moved JUST the documents, and they're back up and running.

Thanks for the input, Chief!

I see there has been some ideas for this fix.  I have now created an instruction area that will walk you through creating a new profile.

In Reference to The signature could not be created because the private key of the certificate could not be accessed" error . Recreating profile does not work. This is on Vista Business using  AGM versions Pureedge and Approve-IT 6.1. If regular user is logged on and you run Pureedge as Admin it works. It will not work if user is admin. It only works when you run as a domain admin with user logged on. I have reinstalled Purredge and Approve-it numerous times and recreated profile numerous times to no resolve. It appears it maybe a permissions problem but having difficulty finding issue. If you turn off UAC it works also but UAC cannot be turned off. If you can provide insight on this issue it would greatly be appreciated.

Hello Flacowboy,

Did you look at #6 at:  https://militarycac.com/errors2.htm#APPROVE_IT  This new cure https://militarycac.com/files/MessageNotFoundFix.pdf may fix this for you.  Please keep in mind that the ideas on this website are for home users.  I have no problem with you trying them on government owned system, but can't guarantee the ideas will work.   Which is why some of these did not work for you.  They have worked on a lot of other peoples personal computers.
